The world is still reeling from shock and consternation after the massacre at the Charlie Hebdo magazine offices in Paris on 7 January. Yet again Islamic fundamentalism is bent on showing the world that it will never tolerate any kind of criticism of its fundamentalist beliefs, even if it means using blind and savage violence and indeed even facing death (or martyrdom in Islamic jargon). On 25 November Pope Francis addressed the European Parliament and the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. His speech was well prepared and touched upon the main issues facing the European Union at this point in time. He expressed his deep respect for the members of the European Parliament and their mission in favour of the unity in diversity of the European continent. At the same time he referred to problematic issues faced by countries of the European Union, including the fact that Europe needs to revitalise its existence and mission since it is a “haggard” institution. During these last months we have been invaded by news of wars and terrorist acts occurring in Syria and Iraq, perpetrated by extremist Islamic elements calling themselves ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) or ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria). All of a sudden the world has seen unfolding before its very eyes a bad dream in which Islamic extremists are beheading foreign journalists and aid-workers with barbaric methods, expelling from their homes thousands of Christians from Syria, and Muslims of various groups different from the Sunni majority from Kurdistan, occupying oil installations and acquiring millions of dollars in the illegal sale of petroleum as well as in clandestine aid from other Arab countries, and welcoming in their ranks thousands of volunteers who came over from Europe to fight for the cause of the holy war of Islam. August 22nd, 2014 @ 10:28 |

Remember the lecture that Pope Benedict XVI gave to intellectuals and researchers of the University of Regensberg, Germany, on 12 September 2006? The words of Benedict XVI, quoted out of their context, inflamed extremist elements in the Muslim world to the extent that hatred against Christianity became all too evident, even though Benedict XVI himself expressed a delicate sense of concern regarding the unexpected result of what was, after all, a simple example of a simple truth, namely, the futility of crimes against humanity in the name of religion. YOU CAN INSULT GOD BUT NOT THE POLICE

November 29th, 2012 @ 11:59 |

Noel Muscat ofm

As from 28 November 2012 the Dutch parliament has decided to scrap an “outmoded and irrelevant” legislation of the 1930s, by which it was a crime to insult God through blasphemy. The funny thing is that a similar law prohibiting citizens from insulting the Queen of the Netherlands or police officers is still in force. More read more
